In fact, until the 27 July incident that killed several Megawati supporters when Soerjadi's supporters tried to seize the PDI DPP office on Jl. Diponegoro from the hands of Mega supporters. Not only that, several activists were also detained and imprisoned because of the riots.

The attack was brought to justice by Mega although the attempt failed in court. Eventually, the PDI split into two, between Mega's and Soerjadi's camps. In 1999, Mega's PDI camp changed its name to PDI-P, which won the general election. The 1999 general assembly finally decided Gus dur as President and Mega as his deputy. Two years later, July 23, 2001, the mandate of the MPR RI that decided Gus Dur as President of the Republic of Indonesia was revoked, Mega finally stepped forward to replace Gus Dur as President.
