Mr. Big: The Complete Biography of the Hard Rock Supergroup

Introduction

Mr. Big is a hard rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1988. Known for their musicianship, vocal harmonies, and blend of hard rock and melodic ballads, Mr. Big rose to global fame in the early 1990s, particularly with their international hit "To Be with You." The band gained recognition for combining virtuosic instrumental skills with catchy songwriting and heartfelt lyrics, establishing a dedicated fanbase around the world.

Formation and Early Years (1988–1989)

Mr. Big was formed by bassist Billy Sheehan after he left the David Lee Roth Band. He recruited guitarist Paul Gilbert (formerly of Racer X), drummer Pat Torpey (who had played with The Knack, Robert Plant, and others), and vocalist Eric Martin (a solo artist with a strong R&B background). The combination of Sheehan’s bass virtuosity and Gilbert’s technical guitar work created a unique sound for the band.

In 1989, they released their self-titled debut album, Mr. Big, which showcased their technical prowess and introduced songs like "Addicted to That Rush"—a fast-paced, energetic track that gained moderate success.

Breakthrough and Mainstream Success (1991–1993)

Their second album, Lean into It (1991), propelled them into international fame. The acoustic ballad "To Be with You" topped the Billboard Hot 100 and became a number one hit in 15 countries. Other singles like "Just Take My Heart" and "Green-Tinted Sixties Mind" also performed well, particularly in Japan and Southeast Asia.

The band’s mix of glam metal, pop rock, and progressive influences helped them stand out during the early 1990s. Despite the rise of grunge, Mr. Big maintained commercial success in Asian markets, especially Japan, where they were treated like rock royalty.

Continued Releases and Line-up Changes (1993–2002)

Their third studio album, Bump Ahead (1993), included a cover of Cat Stevens' "Wild World," which became another hit. The album maintained their signature blend of hard rock and ballads, but didn’t match the success of Lean into It.

In 1996, Hey Man was released and found major success in Japan and Asia, though it saw limited attention in Western markets. By 1997, Paul Gilbert left the band and was replaced by guitarist Richie Kotzen, known for his blues and soul-inflected style. This lineup recorded two albums: Get Over It (2000) and Actual Size (2001), featuring the single "Shine," which was later used as the ending theme for the anime Hellsing.

The band disbanded in 2002 after a farewell tour in Japan, largely due to internal tensions and declining interest in the Western market.

Reunion and Later Career (2009–Present)

In 2009, the original lineup reunited for a world tour to mark the 20th anniversary of their debut. The tour received an enthusiastic response, particularly in Japan, Southeast Asia, and parts of Europe. Their reunion led to the release of What If... (2010), their first album with the original members in nearly a decade. The album was followed by ...The Stories We Could Tell (2014).

Tragically, drummer Pat Torpey was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and later passed away in 2018. His contributions remained integral to the band’s sound, and for subsequent tours, Matt Starr filled in on drums while Torpey participated in a limited capacity.

In 2017, they released Defying Gravity, which served as a tribute to their resilience and marked one of their last full-length records as an active unit.

Musical Style and Legacy

Mr. Big is known for combining hard rock with technical brilliance and strong vocal harmonies. Billy Sheehan’s bass tapping techniques, Paul Gilbert’s high-speed guitar solos, and Eric Martin’s powerful vocals gave them a signature style. Unlike many glam metal bands of the late ’80s, Mr. Big emphasized musicality over theatrics.

They hold a special place in rock history, particularly in Japan and Southeast Asia, where their music continues to enjoy enduring popularity. Their influence can be seen in bands that blend virtuoso musicianship with mainstream appeal.
